Runaway: Short Film and Curriculum

An advertisement for a fugitive enslaved man is the basis for this short film, shot on location at Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow, New York.
Runaway dramatizes a historic document in order to convey the complex emotional experiences of enslaved individuals, which have often been lost to history.  The film follows Sue, an enslaved woman on the Philipsburg Manor plantation, as she attempts to help the fugitives Galloway and Prince, while trying to protect her daughter from being sold.

Students have the opportunity to empathize with Sue and Galloway and to consider the choices each character makes in the balance between family and freedom.

A supplementary teaching guide includes prompts for discussion and post-viewing activities.
